Want An Affordable Mechanical Keyboard That’s Fun To Use? Here’s One For You
I bought Womier K87 with my own money for my personal use. This review reflects my experience with it over a long period of time. It’s an excellent keyboard for the price & slightly more affordable than many of the good mechanical keyboards I tried. If you like the color green, then you will appreciate the botanical theme featured in this review (there are regular versions of it too).
Typing is a joy on this keyboard. I felt at home coding with it. I quite liked the softness of the keys as I typed on them. I find the typing sound to be good, but it may not be for everyone, specially for those looking for a “thock” sound.
The two main aspects where Womier K87 doesn’t compete with more expensive keyboards are the connectivity options (it is USB only) & the lack of QMK support. The Womier software provides all the basic customization options, but it’s only available on Windows. Aside from these, it’s one of the keyboards I don’t feel like is a step down when I use it after using my more expensive keyboard for a while.

Overview Of Womier K87

The most striking thing you will notice upon looking at Womier K87 is the botanical theme & the layered acrylic base. It makes the keyboard feel like a piece of art. This may not affect the functionality of the keyboard, but it makes it pleasant to look at. The default white RGB I saw when I turned it on made it feel like food, to be honest, lool. The backlight can be customized using hotkeys, even without having to use the software. Along with the beautiful shell, its translucence makes the keyboard look really beautiful.

Womier K87 is a TKL keyboard, so it has all the keys of a standard 100% keyboard, except for the numpad island. It’s as if we cut the numpad part of the keyboard using a scissor:-

Some website list this keyboard as 75% keyboard, which is weird if you ask me.
Womier K87 is a USB-only keyboard with no Bluetooth or any other connectivity options. The USB cable is detachable.

Typing Experience

To match my preference, I picked the red switches version, but there is a yellow switches version. The regular edition has more choices for switches, such as black, brown, yellow & blue.
Typing is awesome on this keyboard. The keys feel soft when pushed down, making it fun to use. It stood out among the other keyboards I have. I used it for both typing & coding. It was particularly enjoyable to code with it. In fact, a good portion of my app, Fairy PDF Reader, was written on this keyboard.
The keys make a nice sound while typing, but it’s not particularly loud, and there’s no thock if you’re looking into that. If the feeling of the keys is what you look for the most in a mechanical keyboard, then you will enjoy Womier K87. If it’s thock sound, then you should look for another keyboard.
Hot-Swappable Switches & Keyboard Customization

Womier K87 supports hot-swappable switches, meaning you can easily replace the stock switches without soldering. During the time I used it, I replaced the switches from red to black to brown & back to red again. It’s one of these keyboards I use for testing new switches, since I don’t need a full keycap set for that (granted, smaller keyboard form factors could do that even better, but I tend to prefer to have more keys on my keyboards).
Womier K87 doesn’t support QMK/VIA, which can be a downside for many. Though you can customize it using the Womier software you can download from their site. It can be used to customize both the backlight & each key individually. You can change the report rate & record macros too. It does the job for all the basic needs. The software is Windows only, so if you’re a Linux or Mac user, you will need to have a Windows machine to make use of that. As I mentioned earlier, the backlight can be adjusted using hotkeys on the keyboard itself.
And Finally
Womier K87 is a mechanical keyboard that gives you a nice typing experience without that much. And overall, it delivers excellent value for the money.
I hope you liked my Womier K87 review, and I will see you in another Tech Fairy article. Check out the mobile apps I developed, which I hope you find useful & interesting.
