Buying & testing a cheap SNES controller from AliExpress

I Bought A Cheap SNES Controller From AliExpress; Let’s See How It Turned Out.

Like many of us, I still have my SNES from my childhood days. One day, I got it out and plugged it in, and while it worked, none of the 2 controllers I have worked. I suspected the console itself had an issue recognizing the controllers, as it made no sense for both controllers to stop working. Anyway, later on, I decided to buy a cheap SNES controller from AliExpress to try again. I was already happy with the Nintendo 64 controller I got, so why not try again?…. I eventually got the controller, and it worked. Guess that it was actually the controllers that weren’t working.

Now that I have a working controller, I thought I should share my experience with the controller.

You can buy the same controller I did from this affiliate link.

The Controller From AliExpress Works Well Enough

In all honesty, the cheap controller I got was not a match of the OEM controllers I had. The buttons stick out more, and there’s a difference in the build quality. But it is totally functional, and you can play games with them just fine. It does the job, and I got used to it after some time. If you play SNES games casually, or you simply don’t want to spend much, it can be a great option for you. If you’re the kind of people who fusses about controllers, you won’t be happy with it.

Here’s how the controller looks like compared to the OEM SNES controller:-

There are two options for the face button: the colorful one, which matches the Japanese version, and the purple one, which matches the American version, which matches the one I already had:-

My original ones were the purple ones, so I opted for the colorful one, as I always wanted to try that. Since the controller is cheap, you won’t get any bells & whistles in it. No wireless, turbo or any fancy feature.

Of course, there are other more expensive options if you want higher quality. Here are some recommendations I found in the community (not mine):-

8Bitdo Sn30

    • Wireless
    • Not that expensive
    • It’s a brand I tried many of its controllers.
    • You can still buy this today.

Note:- The community recommends the OEM controller all the time, but since that’s no longer produced, you will have to get it used from eBay or something.

And Finally

I still don’t know why my two controllers stopped working or if I can fix them, but I am happy to have a working SNES with at least one controller. I thought about using the original buttons of the defective controllers in place of the lesser one I bought. That way, I get to have the best of both worlds.

I hope you enjoyed hearing about my experience, and I will see you in another Tech Fairy article. Check out the mobile apps I developed, which I hope you find useful & interesting.
